E-mail (Electronic Mail) A mechanism for sending and receiving electronic messages by means of an Internet Service Provider and the Internet.
Earned Income Income from investments plus the change (+/-) in estimated accrued interest from one month to the next.
Earnings Per Share A company's profit for a period divided by the number of shares of common stock outstanding.
Education IRA A type of IRA that lets you save up to $1000 a year per child and withdraw it tax-free to pay for qualified higher-education expenses.
Effective Date The date on which a security that has filed a registration statement with the SEC can be offered for sale.
Effective Tax Rate Indicates the percentage of every dollar actually paid in taxes. It is calculated by adding together the state and federal income tax and dividing the result by total gross income.
Eligible Employee Employees entitled to receive a benefit, such as the right to participate in a company-sponsored retirement plan or stock plan.
Emerging Markets The markets in nations that are just developing their stock markets. Such markets include Third World nations and the former Communist bloc countries of Eastern Europe.
Eminent Domain The confiscation of the company's property by the government to redeem debt.
Equipment Trust Certificate Bonds which are secured by a lien on the equipment. Railroads and airlines are usually the issuers.
Equities Securities representing equity ownership in a company, or which trade in relationship to the price of such securities.
Equity Net value of your portfolio in a margin account. It is derived by taking your Long Market Value minus any Short Market Value adding any Credit Balance or subtracting any Debit Balance.
Equity Income Funds Funds that, by prospectus and portfolio practice, seek relatively high current income and growth of income through investing 65% or more of their portfolios in dividend-paying equity securities. These fund's gross yield (or net yield) must be at least 125% of the U.S. diversified equity funds universe gross-yield (or net-yield) average.
Equity Options Options on shares of an individual common stock.
Estimated EPS Growth Percentage change in earnings growth expected for a quarter, year, or 5-year time horizon. Figures are calculated from all contributing firms. The 5-year time horizon is expressed as an average annual return.
Ex-Dividend If a stock is "ex-dividend", (without dividend) the buyer of the stock will not receive a dividend that has been declared for that quarter, but the seller will. The trade will be ex-dividend because the settlement date will be after the record date, which determines which holder is entitled to the dividend.
Ex-Dividend Date The first day of trading when the seller, rather than the buyer, of a stock will be entitled to the most recently announced dividend payment. This date set by the NYSE (and generally followed on other U.S. exchanges) is currently two business days before the record date. A stock that has gone ex-dividend is marked with an x in newspaper listings on that date.
Ex-Warrant Stock for which a buyer would not be entitled to the attached warrants.
Exchange An exchange is a centralized location where securities or commodities are traded. The exchanges represented here are the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, and the NASDAQ National Market.
Exchange Privilege (Mutual Fund) A shareholder service that allows shareholders to move their assets from one fund to another fund within the same mutual fund family, usually without any additional sales charge or fees. Fund groups vary in the specific parameters detailing when or how many times an investor may use the exchange privileges.
Execution The completion of a trade. Buying or selling shares is said to have executed an order.
Exercisable Date The date upon which your stock options become available to you for exercise.
Exercise For participants in employee stock option plans: Using your stock option to buy shares of company stock at a set price. Several types of exercise methods are available.

The length of time you have to exercise your stock option subject to the terms of your company's plan.
Expense Ratio A fund's cost of doing business, divided by the net assets in the fund.
Expiration Date Date on which an option and the right to exercise it cease to exist.
Expiration Time The time of day by which all exercise notices must be received on the expiration date.
Exposure The amount of money needed in order to buy the shares if the short put position is exercised. Exposure is calculated as follows: Option's strike price * option multiplier * number of contracts.
Extended Hours Trade Extended Hours Trading allows investors to buy and sell stocks after the close of the traditional market hours trading session.
