U.S. Government Funds
Fund invests at least 65% of its assets in U.S. government and agency issues.

U.S. Government Securities
Securities issued by the U.S. Government. Examples include Treasury notes, Treasury bills and Treasury bonds.

U.S. Savings Bonds
Fixed-income investments issued by the U.S. Treasury Department; they are purchased for half their face value, and can be redeemed for the full face value upon maturity.

Uncovered Call Options
A short call option in which the seller (writer) does not own the shares of underlying stock represented by his or her options contracts.

Uncovered Put Options
A short put option in which the seller (writer) does not have a corresponding short stock position or has not deposited in a cash account cash or cash equivalents to cover the potential exercise of the put.

Underlying Security
The security subject to being purchased or sold upon exercise of the option contract.

Underwriter
Investment bank that, singly or as a member of a syndicate or underwriting group, agrees to purchase a new issue from the issuer and distribute it to investors.

Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA)
The Uniform Gift to Minors Act permits irrevocable gifts of money and securities to minors. The Act gives the power of management to a custodian until the minor reaches the age of majority. The age of majority is the age that an individual is considered an adult. This age differs from state to state, but in most states it is 18.

Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA)
In most states the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) has been adopted, replacing the UGMA (see above) for any gifts made after the new law was passed. The UTMA allows gifts and other means of transferring money or securities to minors. Other ways a minor may receive money include inheritance, insurance settlements or awards from lawsuits. The age at which the minor receives the assets differs from state to state and may also differ based on the source of the funds.

Unit Cost
The price at which the security was purchased, including fees and commissions.

Unit of Trading
The minimum quantity or amount allowed when trading a security. The minimum for options is one contract (that generally covers 100 shares of stock).

Unit Price
When the contract value is allocated to a fund, "units" of that fund are purchased. Each unit has a price which reflects the daily net gain or loss in the underlying securities.

Unrealized Gain/(Loss)
The increase or decrease in market value over the cost basis for unsold securities.

Unvested (Quantity)
For participants in employee stock option plans: The number of options/grants that are not available for exercise under the terms of your company's plan and any agreements between you and your company.

Utility Fund
Fund invests 65% of the fund equity portfolio in utility shares.
